Human in the loop: the responsibility we can’t automate

One of the things I genuinely love about my role, as a field chief data officer (FCDO), is the privilege of engaging with industry leaders who challenge the status quo. These conversations push me to step back and reflect — not just on what AI can do, but on what we, as humans, must do.

In this era, the responsibility we carry — when we choose how to shape, question, and guide these systems — is more critical than ever. I’m constantly reminded that these moments of reflection aren’t about fear, they’re about recognizing the immense power we have to ensure AI serves us, not the other way around. That responsibility demands more than good intentions; it requires a clear approach to governance that helps organizations scale AI with accountability, trust, and control. And that leads us to what I call “the trap.”

The trap

Recently, I had the privilege of hearing Dr. Julia Stamm speak. One idea stayed with me long after the keynote ended: “the certainty trap.” Dr. Stamm describes it as the dangerous illusion that AI systems are somehow infallible — or that their evolution is inevitable, objective, and beyond human influence. I couldn’t agree more.

But I’ll take it one step further: The certainty trap isn’t just a technical risk. It’s a human behavior problem — and one that becomes even more consequential as organizations navigate the growing demands of AI governance and regulation. And we are already deep in it.

This trap shows up across industries. In manufacturing, engineers trust green dashboards, ignoring machines about to fail. In the supply chain, teams rely on predictive models without questioning outdated assumptions. In healthcare, clinicians over-rely on AI diagnoses, skipping human double-checks. These are not edge cases. These are signals. Signals that we are slowly outsourcing not just tasks, but judgment.

And here’s the uncomfortable truth: AI doesn’t remove responsibility. It redistributes it.

And too often, it diffuses it. For example, if AI recommends a loan approval, the human may sign off — but if it fails, responsibility feels spread between them, making ownership unclear.

When everything looks certain, no one feels accountable. That’s the trap.

From oversight to passivity

What worries me isn’t that AI makes mistakes. It’s that humans are starting to stop looking for them.

We move from:

  • Questioning → accepting
  • Interpreting → consuming
  • Deciding → observing
  • Leading → following

We become passive participants in systems we were meant to lead. And that’s how imagination fades. Because imagination doesn’t exist in certainty, it exists in tension, in doubt, in the willingness to ask: “What if this is wrong?”

When we stop asking that question, we don’t just lose control … we lose creativity. We lose accountability. We lose humanity in the system.

The human intention

At the enterprise level, I see this every day. Scaling AI is often framed as a race: More automation. More use cases. More speed.

But that’s not the game we should be playing. Scaling AI is not about how fast you deploy.

It’s about how intentionally you design.

This is where my perspective — and the philosophy we push at Dataiku around governed, human-centered AI — comes into play: If you scale without a human-in-the-loop framework, you’re not scaling intelligence … you’re scaling the certainty trap.

The real question isn’t, “Can this be automated?” It’s, “Where must a human remain accountable?”

Because that’s where trust lives. That’s where resilience lives. That’s where systems survive the real world — not just the clean, controlled environment of a model.

The world is not deterministic. It’s messy. It’s ambiguous. It’s constantly changing. No model, no matter how advanced, fully captures that. And yet, we design systems as if it does. That’s the gap.

The role of the human-in-the-loop is not to slow things down. It’s to anchor systems in reality.

To challenge outputs, to inject context, to question assumptions, to take responsibility when it matters most. Not everywhere. But in the moments that define outcomes. Human elevation, not human replacement.

Agentic AI is here. And it’s powerful. But this is not a story of replacement. It’s a test of leadership. If we get this right, AI becomes a force multiplier for:

  • Intuition
  • Ethics
  • Creativity
  • Judgment

If we get it wrong … we build systems that are fast, scalable, and confidently wrong.

Final thoughts

We need to move beyond the illusion that AI will “figure it out.” Because it won’t.

It will reflect what we design. It will amplify what we tolerate. It will scale what we ignore.

So the question is not whether AI will shape the future. It’s whether we stay actively involved in shaping it. Let’s not become audience members to our own systems.

Let’s build AI that:

  • Challenges us
  • Requires us to bring human judgment, asking tough questions about transparency, ethics, and our responsibility
  • and, ultimately, reflects the best of us

Let’s build AI that leaves no one behind.
